Formerly US Empowered

Before July 2012, OneGoal was known as Urban Students Empowered. Our name changed but our mission, model and culture remain the same. Please read below to learn more about our rationale for the switch - we have included the letter sent to supporters from Jeff Nelson, OneGoal Co-Founder & CEO.

Dear Friends,

As of July 2, 2012, the organization you have come to know as Urban Students Empowered - US Empowered for short - will have a new name, logo and brand identity. With the start of our new fiscal year, and at the outset of Phase II of our operations, our organization will be known as OneGoal. As you know, our main priority - our one goal - is for all of our Fellows to graduate from college.

While this may come as unexpected news to some, our decision to invest in a new brand identity is a long time in coming, and the result of thorough research and planning. As our movement continues to gain momentum, we need an identity that is reflective of the changes we have made in our first five years of operations and will best enable us to reach our long-term goals.

In the last five years, we have experienced exponential growth, refined our curriculum and the ways we measure impact, invested in building a strong organizational culture, and started to implement a unique, strategic plan for national expansion. Our new reality is that we may not always partner with schools in urban communities. And, on the more comical side, when pronounced, US Empowered can be confused with that of the movie character "Austin Powers." Our switch to OneGoal will eliminate these challenges and allow us to head into Phase II of our operations with an utmost focus on student achievement.

July 2012 timing is ideal for our team. We will be able to expand into Houston, our first expansion site, as OneGoal. You may also know our organization will be featured in a book to be published this fall by acclaimed author and New York Times Magazine writer Paul Tough, called How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character. Changing our name at this time eliminates any possible confusion when the book hits shelves on September 4, 2012.

Please expect to hear from us again later this summer. We also encourage you to check your email, as we'll be sharing updates of the transition at various points in June and July. If you are not currently on our list, please opt in here to share your email address with our team. In addition, starting July 2, you'll be able to find us at www.onegoalgraduation.org, where you can see us in action on our first day as OneGoal, sign up for email updates, and opt to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites throughout next year and beyond.

Please join us in ushering in a new era for our organization - one in which our exceptional Program Directors lead even more Fellows to achieve great things and graduate from colleges across the nation. We thank you for your ongoing support of our work, for your assistance in making this transition a success, and for being such an integral part of the US Empowered family. It is because of you that we are able to make this change and we are grateful for your interest and investment in our organization.

Warm regards,

Jeff Nelson
