Our Spirit is Indomitable

Dear OneGoal Community:

These past few days have been some of the most painful in my memory. Last week, like many of you, I watched the horrific murder of George Floyd, yet another Black man dead at the hands of police. This, just weeks after Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and countless others were killed because of the color of their skin. Floyd’s last words were calling out for his mother. As a mother myself, I will never unhear him say, “Mama” and will never forget how those cries for humanity were ignored.

It is no wonder then, that our communities are angry and have erupted in protest for our liberation. Anti-Blackness can no longer be tolerated. People of all races, ages, and backgrounds are coming together to demand justice. And while it is hard to watch violence in our cities and buildings burn, the damage does not begin to compare to the trauma Black Americans continue to endure at the hands of a nation that promises to be the land of opportunity for all. The reality is there is no one right way to grieve injustice and we at OneGoal stand in community with all who speak out against oppression and who are grieving today.

One thing we can and must do is acknowledge that educational inequity exists not just alongside racism, but because of racism. Our educational system was created to benefit the few not the many.
