The Need In The Bay Area

Despite the vast innovation in the Bay Area, not all communities have benefited from the wealth generated by this technology boom. The Bay Area is home to nine counties and countless school districts – some of which are the most affluent in the nation. And yet, in our lower income communities such as Oakland, only 10% of 9th graders are predicted to graduate from college. Meanwhile, in more affluent districts, as many as 85% will attend and graduate from college.

“One of the things I value most about teaching is building relationships with my students and helping them see and reach their true potential. OneGoal's mission aligns with mine and provides me with the tools to reach more kids, and hopefully inspire them to come back to their communities to do the same thing.”

Stepping Up During COVID-19

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the opportunity gap between students from wealthy and under-resourced communities grows wider as accessibility to alternative options, like distance learning, are out of reach for those without the financial means. To create greater levels of equity in our community, we must address the barriers our students face on their postsecondary journeys and ensure they can apply, enroll, and matriculate to higher education.

Local Impact

Through the three years that we’ve served Fellows in the Bay Area, we’ve continued to put Fellows first. As a result, 100% of high school partners renewed their partnership for the 2020-2021 school year. Additionally, as of September, we’ve awarded $35,000 in emergency funding to help make sure the pandemic doesn’t keep Class of 2020 students from enrolling in postsecondary education.
