The Need In The Bay Area

Despite the vast innovation in the Bay Area, not all communities have benefited from the wealth generated by this technology boom. In the East Bay, 71% of students reside in low-income communities, and the majority would be the first in their family to graduate from college. In Oakland, only 10% of ninth graders are projected to complete college, contributing to more income inequality in the Bay Area—which currently sees high earners with incomes ten times those of low earners. To create greater levels of equity in our community, we must address the barriers our students face on their postsecondary journeys and turn their aspirations into achievements.

Stepping Up During COVID-19

Helping Fellows navigate COVID-19 and remain on track has never been more critical. In response, we created a COVID-19 page detailing important shifts to our program and providing resources. We also launched Forward Together, a campaign to help raise the necessary funds to serve our community now and throughout this pandemic.

We are currently serving our first class of Fellows during the 2018-2019 school year in partnership with the Oakland Unified School District and the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

Meet Lia

“My work is defined by the lifelong fight to counteract systems and structures of oppression. I want to be an agent of change, and however I can, to empower and share resources to support students and families in doing the same when it comes to educational equity.”

“As leaders of The Oakland Promise, we fully endorse and welcome the addition of OneGoal to our portfolio of providers serving the students of Oakland. We believe that the OneGoal model provides additional necessary, differentiated support for our students who are most at-risk of not completing college, and we have advocated for OneGoal’s consideration of the Bay Area for site expansion in conversations over the last year.”
